7 Bedroom Decor Tips for Creating Good Feng Shui

Bedroom Feng Shui

A bedroom is a sanctuary.

The bedroom is a place to relax, recharge and reset, and anyone who has ever spent the night in a loud and tacky motel or hostel room can attest to the fact that a serene bedroom makes for a better sleep.

The art of feng shui is about harmonizing human existence with the surrounding environment; feng shui translates to “wind-water” in English.

With over 3,500 years of history behind the concept, feng shui is about creating spaces with good energy flow and a balanced sense of space. Modern feng shui concepts can be applied to achieve that same sense of energy and balance in your home. Here are 7 ways to incorporate elements of feng shui to attain the ultimate in tranquility.

Stay Away From Clutter

Feng shui is about creating fresh energy, and clutter will prevent this effect. Deep clean the bedroom and keep everything in its place. If you find it impossible to keep the space clean, try to keep it out of sight (like in the closet).

Keep in mind that clutter does not always mean junk. Television sets, computers and exercise equipment can keep your mind running when it needs to shut off, so try to avoid storing these items in the bedroom.

Create a Cocoon

Skin tones and natural earthy tones create a calming environment, from whites to deep browns. When the colors of a bedroom make it feel nourishing and cocoon-like, the goal has been achieved. For some, this could mean warm tans and browns. Others might find a white palette rejuvenating; and others, still, might feel energized by a palette with all the colors of a sunset.

Other details can help create the cozy feeling. For instance, fireplaces literally and figuratively create warmth, and artwork can help set the right tone.

Balance the Feminine and Masculine

Balance out the yin and the yang by including both feminine and masculine accents throughout the bedroom. Think soft features like decorative pillows, throws, window treatments and padded headboards, with masculine touches like darker colors and structured furniture.

Focus on Symmetry

A symmetrical room represents balanced energy. Imagine a line was drawn down the center of the room: would the left side reflect the right? To achieve symmetry, place the bed in the middle of the room, and accessorize in pairs. Think matching lights and side tables on each side of the bed.

Pique Your Senses

Incorporate elements that will trigger positive, calming effects in your body. For instance, aromatherapy can create a calming, spa-like environment (think natural smells like lavender, not overly fake-smelling scents). Lush textiles, like a rich chenille blanket or a plush area rug, will help you relax from head to toe.

Go With the (Air)Flow

Good air flow will lead to good energy flow. Let the air circulate naturally by keeping windows open when possible. If that’s not available, an air purifier will let you breathe deeply and cleanly.

Mood Lighting

You seldom see fluorescent lighting in a romantic restaurant. Lighting can have an incredible effect on a room. Sometimes, you’ll want a very bright space to get you up and moving, especially in the winter when it might still be dark when the alarm sounds. Conversely, you’ll want soft lighting in the evening when you’re getting ready to fall asleep.

Lights with dimmers are one way to achieve this balance. Another option is to have multiple sources of lighting: turn them all on when you want to get up and moving, or keep only one or two lit in the evening.

Of course, it might not be practicable or desirable to incorporate all of these elements into your room. Pick and choose what suits you best—even small changes can go a long way!
