Think you’re a home decorating master? Because you’d be surprised at some of the little mistakes people make when setting up the humble abode, resulting in decor disaster. But don’t worry-they can be fixed! Here are 6 common decorating mistakes and how to nix them.

Mistake No. 1: Matching Furniture
That’s right folks. Decorating has never been more versatile, funky and eclectic, because not matching can really pull together a room and add a little bit of excitement. Don’t opt for the boring, matching bedroom or living room sets. Instead, collect colorful, varying pieces to pull together your living atmosphere. Already have matching furniture? No problem, spice them up with new, colorful pillows and throws.

Mistake No. 2: Chopped up Space
When it comes to decorating, it’s all about pleasing the eyes. When you decorate each room completely differently, as in painting walls in one room bold and then light in another, it makes the room look choppy, small and like a bubble. Rooms need to flow so that they are more harmonious to view and create an open, airy appearance. To accomplish this, simply stay with a similar color theme and keep floors the same material and color as well.

Mistake No. 3: Overdoing the Clutter
Think about it: is it comfortable sitting on a couch jam packed with cushions? Didn’t think so. Stick with the age-old saying “less is more” when it comes to decorating a room. Keep picture frames, art, pillows and gadgets to a minimum for a crisp, breathable look.

Mistake No. 4: Buying Oversized and Uncomfortable Furniture for the Look
When it comes to decorating a home we tend to forget what the home is for in the first place- comfort! Sure, that edgy, modern sofa looks slick, but how does that flat surface feel on your tush? Also, if you reversed the situation, buying a huge, plush sofa for comfort may not fit in the area you want to keep it. Have a plan and do your research before you go out shopping. A lot of times, furniture in stores look better because of high ceilings and wide space. Keep in mind that it may change once relocated to your space.

Mistake No. 5: Poor Lighting
Lighting has plays a larger role in your home than just providing light to see, because it also adds to the décor big time. Many times people have trouble deciding how and where to put lighting. The trick is to use various lighting sources and layer light in a room. Keep the overhead light bulbs and add accents, such as a dim lamp on a corner table or a standing lamp in a room corner.

Mistake No. 6: Pushing Furniture up Against a Wall
It’s almost second nature to push furniture up against a wall and in some cases it’s ok, but a lot of times it can make a room look more like a hallway. Instead, try “floating” furniture in the right space. Place an ottoman into the center of the rom and push chairs or sofas right there with it to make a room appear bigger and to keep the concentration on middle room action.
