What You Need to Know About Pillows

We’ve come a long way since the days of ancient Egypt. Back then, pillows were stone pillars that were used to prop up heads in order to prevent insects from entering various orifices. Thankfully, that’s typically not a concern these days and we’ve progressed to decidedly more comfortable options. Considering how much time you spend with your face pressed up against them, you probably want to know as much about pillows as you possibly could. How often should you replace them? What type suits which kind of sleeper? Feather or foam? All of these answers and more in this handy guide to pillows.

Know Your Fillings
Feathers, polyester, gel, foam. So many options, how do you choose? First, consider your sleep environment. Is breathability important to you? How about warmth? Do you have allergies? Before committing, be sure to educate yourself on all your options. Consult a helpful guide (consider this the ultimate pillow cheat sheet) and get ready for some seriously blissful sleep.

Sleep Position
As far as pillows are concerned, one size (or style) definitely does not fit all. Stomach, side, and back sleepers all require different pillow types to properly accommodate them while they catch their z’s. Stomach sleepers should seek out flat pillows in order to correctly position the neck whereas back sleepers need to have the top of their spine supported. Be sure to check that the pillow you like is suited for your sleep style and say goodbye to aches and pains upon wakeup.

Firmness
Here’s where you channel your inner Goldilocks and consider the firmness of your pillow. Do you dream of extra soft coziness? That’s perfect, provided you’re a stomach sleeper as this firmness (or rather, lack thereof) allows your spine to relax and avoids pressure points. Extra firm pillows are great for side sleepers as it keeps everything aligned and as it should be. Fancy yourself more of a freestyle sleeper? No problem, there’s apillow for you too. Medium firmness is the best of both worlds and allows for total sleep flexibility.

Lifespan
Like most good things, pillows don’t last forever. Typically, they have a 3-5 year lifespan before their support starts to decrease and they become less effective. A simple test to see if your pillows could stand to be replaced is to fold it in half and press out any air. If it quickly returns to its original shape, you’re fine. If it stays compressed, time for an upgrade. Another thing worth staying on top of is the smell. Anything musty or mildewy is no good and needs to be replaced.

Care
You wash your bedding every week (right?) so why should your pillows be neglected? They don’t require as much upkeep as the rest of your bed clothes but they could definitely stand to be cleaned every so often. Ideally, an annual trip to the dry cleaners should do it. That being said, life is full of unexpected messes so it’s helpful to know what to do at home. First, use hot water. It kills dust mites which is a good thing. Use mild detergent and avoid harsh bleaches. Use a gentle agitation cycle or better yet, wash by hand. Rinse, gently squeeze out extra water, and let air dry. Finally, add the pillow and a clean tennis ball to the dryer and let it fluff back up.
