Room Color and How it Affects Your Mood

Bedrooms are personal, and so are colors. Colors in the room set the mood and showcase your personality. Color is therapeutic and affects our thoughts, moods and feelings. The psychology of color is fascinating. Although science does not understand it completely, it does know that color affects us dramatically. When looking to decorate your bedroom, think about what theme or mood you are looking to portray and choose the color(s) that best exude that feeling.

Warm Colors
Warm colors are cozy, radiant and uplifting. Warm colors are found on one side of the color wheel including various hues of red, orange, yellow and yellow-green.  Warm colors make small rooms appear larger and large rooms more intimate.

Cool Colors
Cool colors are calming, peaceful and healing. Located on the opposite end of the color wheel, cool colors include various hues of blues, purples and blue-greens. Cool colors work well for bedrooms that have lots of natural light. However, dark bedrooms with cool colors will exude a cooler feeling.

Neutral Colors
Neutral colors include white, gray and black. In decorating definitions, neutral colors also include soft hues, beiges, browns and khaki colors. Neutral works well with color to liven the room. However, using black in small dosages like on comforters, art pieces and rugs can help “ground” the room.

Red
Red is uplifting, racy and energetic. Red stimulate appetites, conversation, blood pressure and heart rate. To keep hearts calm, choose rich, deep reds. This color pumps adrenaline like no other hue in the color wheel.

Orange
Orange promotes energy, excitement and enthusiasm. This is a perfect color for those who love to workout in their bedroom (not yoga) and ancient cultures believe orange healed lung issues and increases energy levels.

Yellow
Yellow, like the sunshine, makes people happy, cheerful and uplifting. The color promotes “expansion” in small spaces and stimulates nerves and purifies the body in chromotherapy. Research shows babies cry more in yellow rooms and people lose their temper easily in yellow-dominated rooms. Keep it to a minimum in bedrooms.

Green
Green is the most restful color for the eyes. It promotes unwinding, comfort and togetherness. Green is relaxing, stress relieving and known to stimulate fertility.

Blue
Blue is the most relaxing, serene and calming color for bedrooms. It is known to reduce blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. Aim for soft hues of blue, dark blue can promote sadness and in turn have the opposite effect of calming and relaxation. Blues work well in rooms with plenty of natural light. Dark rooms feature a cool and chilly atmosphere.

Purple
Light purples, lavender and lilac, promote restful features, like blue. However, it does not evoke the chilly feeling of blue. Deep purples evoke drama, sophistication, and richness. It also enhances the feelings of luxury and creativity.
