6 Simple Changes to Remove Stress from Your Home

PediaPress_Book_Reading_2

Stress…it sucks and we all deal with it on a regular basis. It doesn’t need to be that way though, and there are little things you can change in your life to promote a happy, calm you. Sure, exercise, healthy diet and quiet time combat stress, but did you ever think that de-stressing your life could start with your abode? Here are 6 simple changes to remove stress from your home.

Kick the Clutter
And that doesn’t mean getting all OCD and keeping your home immaculate 24/7. Instead, opt for keeping your place tidy enough to where if a friend were to drop by for a visit you aren’t running around like a crazy person trying to tidy up. The key is to keep your stuff organized. Don’t leave it on tables, on the floor or out in the open. Invest in furniture that doubles as storage, such as an ottoman that holds objects, or add more shelving to walls. Clear, open space will instantly relax and organization helps you to breathe easy.

Let the Light Shine
Sure, curtains and blinds offer privacy and décor to any household, but don’t forget to let the natural light in a little! Some light is crucial to maintain a positive atmosphere within your household. Soaking up vitamin D, which can be absorbed through sunlight, helps combat stress and promotes good mood. Long dreary winter months getting you down? Open up those windows, you probably just need a little sunshine in your life!

Snack Stress Free
When times are busy and you are juggling a million things at once, it can be easy to forget to eat or just grab fast food or an unhealthy snack when there is no time to prepare a healthy, home cooked meal. Unhealthy habits such as these are not going to help stress and will only make it worse! Stock up your kitchen pantry with quick, grab-and-go snacks such as cut up veggies, fruits, nuts and protein bars. Fueling your body in the right way will give it the energy needed to work through stress, and starting by making changes in your kitchen is half the battle.

Stop and Smell the Roses
This one is a no brainer. Sometimes when you are running around doing errands it can be easy to forget the simple joys in life. Make it a habit to always present fresh flowers in your home; the little extra care and cost is totally worth it. It adds a fun splash of color and beautiful, natural décor and come on, who doesn’t feel a sense of happiness and calm with a big vase bursting with vibrant blossoms!

Create a Calm Nook
You need a place in your home to call yours. A space with an over-sized comfy recliner, or a nook by a window adorned with fluffy pillows and a silky, soft throw. Then, take some time everyday for yourself, even if it’s just 20 minutes a day. Shut off the phone, computer and TV and pick up a book or journal instead. Taking time for yourself in a private spot of your house where you feel safe and comfortable will help clear your mind and offer a moment of solace in your busy life.

Tackle that Closet
We’ve all been there and it’s always in the back of our minds; that beast of a closet waiting to devour us with the overwhelming mountains of clothes we don’t wear. You know what I’m talking about people–your favorite mini skirt from high school that, lets face it, isn’t going to work out anymore or when you buy new sneakers and keep your old ones, convinced you can use them for something. It’s time to address denial, say good-bye to the old and hello to the new. Take a day to go through and organize your closet and be honest with yourself on what you really need to keep. Ask “how often do I wear this?” and “how many of the same color/style do I have?” Closet organization will take a load off your back and you will feel good donating clothes to those less fortunate!
