In addition to being a bathroom convenience, a well-stocked medicine cabinet can become the most important part of your home in the event of minor injury or illness. Here are 6 tips on how to best stock a medicine cabinet that will ensure that all your bases are covered.

Basic Medications
At the risk of sounding like Captain Obvious, you’re going to want to make sure that your medicine cabinet contains some basic over-the-counter remedies that you’ll be mighty grateful for when you’re knocked out by the flu or a splitting headache. At the very least, keep a bottle of painkillers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen are good choices), decongestant, antihistamines, and antacids. Just be sure to periodically check expirations dates as old medication can be ineffective or downright dangerous.

Thermometer
You never think about thermometers until you’re convinced that you’re so feverish that you might just melt. Thanks to terrific technological advances, there’s no longer a need to fear inserting a glass and mercury torture device where the sun don’t shine, which means that there’s no excuse not to have a thermometer on hand. Pick up a basic digital model at any drugstore or, if you have little ones or just prefer something a little more high tech, check out the speedy and fuss-free ear options (Braun makes a great one).

General First Aid Supplies
Cuts, bumps, and scrapes happen and when they do, you want to be prepared. Arm yourself against infection with an assortment of bandages, antiseptics, and antibiotic ointments, all readily available and easy to stash away. In addition to your typical adhesive bandages, be sure to stock up on medical tape as well as gauze wraps and pads for cuts requiring a little extra damage control.

Sunscreen
By now you should know that sunscreen should be a part of your daily routine, no matter what the weather. In order to make it easier to remember to slather on this crucial skin-saver, keep a bottle or two on hand at all times. There are plenty of specially formulated options out there that are suited for all skin types which means that there is absolutely no excuse to go without. As with medication, keep an eye on the best-by date—sunscreen can and will go bad, rendering it completely ineffective.

Extras
If you’ve got room to spare, consider keeping a small collection of guest supplies on hand so that when you host an impromptu sleepover, your visitors will feel right at home. All you really need is a spare toothbrush and some contact solution, regardless of whether or not you require corrective lenses. Chances are your guests will be grateful and you’ll feel like the host with the most.

All-Purpose Balm
Last but certainly not least, every medicine cabinet worth its salt needs a good multipurpose treatment, a jack of all trades if you will. If you’re searching for a tried, tested, and true option, look no further than the classic Bag Balm. Originally formulated to sooth sore cow udders, people have been using this salve as burn relief, lip balm, blister cream… the possibilities are virtually endless.
